How to install apps on Fire TV

How to install apps on Fire TV

Installing apps on a Fire TV (or Fire TV Stick) is dead easy. Here's how.

Step 1 of 4: Update to the latest software

Setting up a Fire TV is simple: you plug it into a spare HDMI socket on your TV, attach the power cable and then follow the on-screen instructions.
A Fire TV isn't much use if you don't enter your Amazon details (email and password) and you'll need to do this to install apps.
We're using a Fire TV Stick with the latest software (5.0.5) so if your interface doesn't look like the image here, your Fire TV could do with an update - find the option under Settings, System, About.

Step 2 of 4: Browse apps

When you're ready, scroll through the main menu with your remote control and select Apps.
As with other app stores, there are various categories so scroll through them until you find what you're after. Most of the apps you need are under 'Top Free', which includes iPlayer, Netflix, All 4, ITV Hub and more.
There are also games to download, plus other apps, and these are a mixture of free and paid-for offerings. If you have a payment method linked to your Amazon account, this will be debited if you buy a paid-for app here.

Step 3 of 4: See app details

If you're unsure if you want to get a particular app, simply press the circular button in the centre of the direction buttons to see an app's description.

Step 4 of 4: Install apps

When you've found Netflix, iPlayer or whichever app you want to install.
Either select it or press the down button to highlight the 'Get' button and press the middle button to select it and start the installation.
After the file is downloaded it will be installed automatically. The button will then change to 'Open' when it's ready.
Some apps will require you to enter your username and password to use them, while others only offer this as an option for convenience. For example, you can't use Netflix unless you already have a subscription, while you can use the All 4 app without logging in. However, if you do log in you'll see your favourites and you'll be able to resume videos from wherever you left off (even if that was on another computer or device).
And that's it: that's all there is to installing apps on a Fire TV.
